In
Flames has gotten a reputation as being the most successful
of the Swedish death metal bands. Although being the
most popular Swedish death metal band isnt saying
too much they have certainly made a significant impact
on the metal world in general. One of their best and
most influential works is The Jester Race.
The
Jester Race is a perfect example of how metal is supposed
to be done. It starts of with a song called Moonshield
the song starts off with about 50 seconds or so of guitars
which may sound quite weak to you if you
are just becoming acquainted with the band but after
that it I dont believe Ive heard too much
more that is heavier and louder than the guitars on
this song. Another plus to this album is the guitar
solos, you are guaranteed at least one solo on each
song plus two songs of solos and the only words I can
use to describe them are simply amazing. Moving right
along to song number 11 Goliaths disarm their
Davids the first few seconds of the song remind
me of some nu-metal band but those thoughts are quickly
out of your head as you begin to hear the guitar work
on this song. It starts off simple enough but eventually
turns into something I can only describe as pure death
metal. It is so loud and fast that it just blows you
away. Finally we come to the last song called Behind
space it starts off very weirdly not like any
other song on the album but it is one of my favorites.
It is very fast and the vocals are very hard to keep
up with but the thing I like best about this song is
the solo towards the end of the song. Im not sure
how to describe it you really have hear it for yourself
to understand its as if he just keeps bending
the notes until it cant go any further it is truly
quite amazing.
All
in all In Flames did an extremely good job on this album.
The only downside to it is the lyrics. Unless you have
a very trained ear it will be very hard for you to understand
what Anders is saying. Overall I must say this is quite
possibly one of my top five favorite albums.
