I
admit I usually don't walk into a blind purchase
of an album but I decided to take a chance with Dimmu
Borgir. They came so highly recommended by the fine
people at the dearly departed Antimtv that I worked
up the nerve to go out on a limb and hope for the best.
For my first Black metal album I couldn't have
been happier. I now realize why they came so highly
recommended, simply put it is a perfect combination
of gothic classical music and heavy metal.
The
album starts of with a piece called "fear and wonder".
They couldn't have chosen a better introduction
piece to this album, it is an orchestral piece played
by the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra. I described it to
my friends as the perfect piece to raise the devil to
so to speak, the violins create such an evil sound on
top of everything else which makes you feel as if you're
in a graveyard. Even if you despise classical music
this song is sure to bring you thoughts of evil and
death.
The
next song on this album goes by the name of "Blessings
Upon the Throne of Tyranny". This song starts off
unexpectedly and extremely fast. The drumming is amazingly
fast and well played along with the Guitar work. The
one thing about this song though that amazes me is that
halfway through it changes completely. One second it's
extremely fast then it's extremely loud. Normally
this would throw a band off but it comes together very
well. A piano is added to the background which adds
a very gothic sense to this song. No matter how you
like your metal this song is sure to give you something
you like.
Moving
right along we come to a little piece by the name of
"Hybrid Stigmata the Apostasy". The song starts
of with about ten seconds of violins then transforms
into one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard.
The Violin stays in the back round and adds an evil
tone to the song. The double bass drums on this song
are amazing it is comparable to Slayer. Towards the
end of the song the violin comes back and brings in
another set of loud and abusive riffs brining about
the close of the song.
I
believe the next time I make a trip to Plan 9 I will
pick up another one of Dimmu Borgir's albums. This
album simple put will blow you out of the water if you
aren't ready for it. It is able to bring together
classical and heavy metal to create a sound like none
other. The only issues I had with the album are the
lyrics. They are extremely morbid and inaudible to the
untrained, which isn't a problem for me but may
be for you. Just to put it into context the have a vocalist
and a clean vocalist. All in all this album is a must
have for the true metal fan it has everything from classical
to Black metal to bring you a sound that will rock your
world.
